About the artists:

Shirley Nicholson

Shirl Nicholson is a Brisbane based artist who has always been interested in creative arts and craft activities, and in 2021 she decided to turn her hand to painting. While she has no formal training, Shirl received initial mentoring from friends and fellow artists and has attended workshops on watercolour painting.

In 2022 she was invited to become a member of the Queensland Art Collective and has begun exhibiting her paintings at various venues. She has also exhibited at the Brisbane RNA (Ekka).

Her artwork focuses primarily on landscapes, architecture and places of interest visited on many caravanning trips, as well as other family holiday destinations. She paints with acrylics and watercolour, and is interested in exploring other mediums and subjects. She would also like to develop her skills in portrait painting.

Jeanette Blake

Jeanette Blake is a mixed-media artist based in Brisbane, whose work uniquely combines acrylic paint with found objects such as old metal bits, rusty iron, lacy scraps, broken jewellery, buttons, braid, and scraps of paper. Preferring to work on wood rather than canvas, Jeanette creates vibrant, quirky compositions often featuring birds engaged in strange, whimsical activities, alongside abstract elements.

Working from a small, messy studio nestled in bushland near Brisbane's centre, Jeanette draws inspiration from her natural surroundings, including the local water dragons and a crow with a broken wing that encourages her creativity. With a decade of dedicated practice, she has participated in several residencies across Australia, exploring diverse interpretations of her art.

Jeanette's style reflects her love for the quirky and unusual, evolving into a distinctive blend of assemblage and painting that invites viewers to explore a world of oddities and charm. Her art is a celebration of found materials and imagination, inviting audiences to see beauty and narrative in unexpected places.
