A LOOSE ARRANGEMENT
In Loose Arrangements, the traditional still life is reimagined as a dynamic, unfolding process of recollection and discovery. Following a decade spent in the dense urbanity of Hong Kong, this body of work marks a profound sensory re-entry into the Australian landscape, specifically a deep engagement with its distinct, unforgivingly brilliant light.
The foundation of this series relies on chance and immediacy. With secateurs a permanently in her car, the neighbourhood becomes a studio corridor; an encountered native flora or roadside botanical triggers an impulsive pull-over for a cutting. In the studio, these gathered objects are not merely observed but orchestrated. They become playful, experimental and fluid. Rendered through a sophisticated layering process, the compositions possess a unique kinetic energy. Shadows and forms from previous abstract periods emerge in the background, anchoring the botanical subjects in a rich, multi-dimensional history.
True to its title, the works favour a loose, intuitive style where one gesture organically dictates the next. Loose Arrangements is an elegant, meditation on place, offering an intimate look at what we gather to ground ourselves and the objects we love.
