FAMILIAR MOMENTS

DAVINA ELSE

Davina Else presents a new body of work, a collection of childhood memories. Each painting inspired by photographs from her formative years. Captured by family or teachers, these paintings reveal the tender moments of childhood and the family dynamics that shape us. The works are mainly oil on board; Else is drawn to oil for its detail and lifelike tones, while the uniform board size mimics the photo prints that inspired them.

When selecting images to paint from the vast collection in her parents’ possession, Davina is drawn to candid moments, the expressions and angles that suggest a β€˜point and shoot’ style of capture. Starting with these candid images allows her to connect more deeply with the moment, either from a perspective of the figure or the person behind the camera. It is this connection that motivates the painting, determining where to focus her attention, the details to be emphasised, and the creative liberties to take.

Else’s creative process is a journey of self-discovery, exploring the intricacies of human connection and the beauty of the mundane. By sharing these moments from her own life, Davina hopes to inspire empathy and encourage viewers to cherish the tender moments that have shaped their own.
