HOME  /  LAND

 (loch/brae/creek/bush)

“Home/Land” is a reflection on the profound connection between place, identity, and the ever-evolving relationship between two lands that have shaped my life in different but inseparable ways—Scotland and Australia. As a migrant, I have experienced the dissonance of leaving one home and creating another, and this collection of paintings seeks to explore that tension through the interplay of light, space, and colour.

Scotland, with its mist-laden skies and muted, earthy tones, is etched into my memory with cool blues, deep greens, and the rich textures of its rugged landscapes. The Scottish light, often diffused and soft, has a way of drawing out an emotional stillness, a quietness that invites contemplation. In contrast, Australia, with its vast open skies and sharp, sun-soaked expanses, brings a brilliant clarity to the eye and the spirit. The Australian light is crisp, almost tangible, imbuing everything it touches with warmth, vibrancy, and a sense of endless horizon.

In Home/Land, I explore how these two worlds, once physically separated, now overlap within me, both in my memory and in the very act of painting. The color palettes I use are a deliberate blending of these two realms: Scotland’s muted greys and deep greens merge with the bright, expansive golds and oranges of the Australian landscape. This fusion speaks to the layers of my own journey, where each place is never fully left behind, but instead is reinterpreted, re-experienced, and remembered through the lens of where I am now.

The canvases are spaces where these two lands—these two homes—are not in conflict but in dialogue. The contrasts in light, the difference in atmosphere, and the play of color across the surface of the paintings serve as a metaphor for my own migration: a journey not of leaving, but of re-orienting and transforming. Through these works, I invite the viewer to reflect on the nature of home—whether it’s a place, a feeling, or a state of mind—and how the land, with its shifting light and landscapes, can both anchor us and set us free.

In every brushstroke, I capture the emotional resonance of both places, finding, in their overlap, a deeper understanding of self and belonging. This is Home/Land: an ongoing conversation between two homes, between two ways of seeing the world, and ultimately, between two versions of who I am.
