LOVE LIKE WATER
is the first solo exhibition from Magandjin artist Tegan Bates. This exhibition features abstract oil paintings depicting fragments of memory, emotion, and imagined landscapes on the themes of modern love and relationships.
From the Artist
My art practice centres around abstract oil painting. Through painting I explore my inner world to create pictures that sit somewhere between abstraction and recognition.
My process is intuitive and spontaneous, often utilising the Surrealist technique of Automatism by allowing my hand to guide the brush with little to no prior forethought, making decisions of colour and gesture on the fly. Through this technique I am interested in the idea of accessing the unconscious mind through gesture, movement, and rhythm.
The exhibition, Love Like Water, draws parallels between love and romance and the elements of nature: water, earth, fire and air. The exhibition posits that all four elements are necessary if love and romance is to be long lasting. Love can be a flame that burns fast but fizzles quickly. Love can also be like water, free flowing and adaptable to change and obstacles.
