SANDBOX MODE
Sandbox Mode is a collaborative exhibition between Meanjin-based artists Toby Ieuan and An Kzvna. Featuring a collation of photographs taken whilst travelling over the last decade, the exhibition aims to construct a dream-like, idyllic world that captures the way memories of place and time are rendered upon recollection.
The concept of the world as an endless sandbox is representative of how the colours, shapes, people, landscapes, and eccentric details come to define our core recollections of space and time after travelling, regardless of how idealised they may be. As direct experiences of travelling fade with time, our memory is often only left with this colourful, visually hyperbolic world, which is typically pre-emptively captured in travel photographs.
The exhibition is split across three spaces that feature different curations of photographs taken in cities, the natural world, and at night. In each of these spaces, the artists seek to build a uniform singular world out of photographs taken from extremely different locations through the use of shared colours and motifs. This is representative of how recollections of vastly different spaces can blend into one within the endless sandbox of memory.

Information about the Artists
An Kzvna is a Ukrainian-Australian multidisciplinary artist, primarily using mediums of photography, music, poetry and digital art. Her primary motivator for travel is for the opportunity to explore, experience and grow; photography allows her to document and share her learnings with the world. This exhibition features photographs from Kzvnaβs travels in Europe, Asia, the Pacific Islands and Australia- a curation which has allowed her to share moments from physical feats (multi-day treks and adventures in Slovenia, Georgia and Armenia), immersion in different cultures, and celebrations of the beautiful and diverse world we live in.
Toby Ieuan is an audiovisual artist based in Meanjin/Brisbane, Australia. His work seeks to playfully explore relationships between humans and the built environment, focussing on the concept of overtourism where crowds are simultaneously a burden and a mountain of individual joyful experiences. In this exhibition, Ieuan has curated photographs from the last ten years of travels, mostly in east and central Asia, which best represent the world as it sits in memory. These include moments of urban calm, where the colours of cities like Pyongyang and Guiyang take on an ethereal character; as well as the hazy dreamscapes of Altyn Arashan, SnΓ¦fellsnes, and Yuraygir. Ieuan is consistently inspired by the sheer intensity of the worldβs colour, and seeks to recreate this vibrancy in his work.
Information about the Collaboration
This collaboration came together after years of mutual artistic admiration over each othersβ travel photography and itineraries through lesser-travelled parts of the world. Both Ieuan and Kzvna share a mutual love for vigorously documenting every part of their travels, from hotel wallpaper and mosaics to khachapuri and marshrutkas.
