URBANITY
John Bell
Like any city ours is in perpetual flux – buildings and houses go up, then get torn down and the landscape changes again. I prefer things that last and age naturally.
When I moved to Brisbane in 1980 change moved at a slower pace, as if nothing needed to alter much; people seemed to move more slowly through our Summer’s stifling heat, and passers-by greeted me with an easy smile.
All that has changed.
Many of the paintings in this show are drawn from my partner-in-art Jenni Bell, a prolific photographic artist, and my personal advisor for many years on design and colour. Her studied pictures supplied much inspiration and plenty of pictorial challenges.
Thankfully many of the old homes remain, especially in this local area – you can identify them in my pictures. Even though the numerous floods changed so much, many landmarks remain. These paintings are a record of our city before much of the rampant development obscured the past.
