FIELD NOTES

HELEN EVANS, ANNA GUTHRIE

ANNA GUTHRIE, Ceramics

HELEN EVANS, Paintings

Field Notes: Breaking New Ground brings together the practices of Helen Evans and Anna Guthrie, two artists whose work emerges from sustained observation of the places they inhabit.

Following her relocation to Brighton 4017, Evans has used painting to become familiar with the rhythms, colours, gardens and everyday beauty of her new surroundings. Her botanical imagery develops through repeated looking and reflects the gradual process through which an unfamiliar environment becomes known and experienced as home.

Guthrie approaches place through clay, textiles, walking and material investigation. Her work incorporates clay and botanical matter gathered from a Moreton Bay housing development, where the landscape is undergoing significant transformation. Through ceramics, eco-printing, stitching and field documentation, she explores material memory, environmental change and the ways communities form connections with evolving landscapes.

The title Field Notes describes the artists’ shared way of working. Both keep journals, collect observations, sketch ideas and return to the same subjects over time. Their paintings, ceramics and textiles can be understood as material field notes: records of attention shaped through different hands and different ways of seeing.

Breaking New Ground refers both to land physically altered through development and to the experience of encountering a place anew. While their materials and perspectives differ, Evans and Guthrie are connected by a shared commitment to noticing, recording and making meaning from the everyday landscapes that continue to shape them.
