6 Week Oil Painting Course with Danielle O'Brien
Join Brisbane artist Danielle O'Brien for a six-week oil painting course at Field Trip.
Full price per course is $450 per person.

This course is designed for beginners and intermediate students who would like to build confidence in oil painting across a structured six-week program.
Over six classes, students will be introduced to a range of traditional oil painting techniques and materials, while developing one resolved painting from start to finish. The course covers foundational drawing and measuring skills, colour mixing, limited palette painting, glazing, scumbling, alla prima, and canvas preparation.
By the end of the course, students will have a stronger understanding of oil painting materials, techniques, and process, as well as practical knowledge around varnishing, storage, hanging, and framing.
Class 1
Safety, introduction to grisaille and imprimatura technique, proportions, angles, and measuring.
Students will work on canvas paper.
Class 2
Limited palette discussion, blocking in, working dark to light, glazing, and scumbling.
Students will continue on canvas paper.
Class 3
Introduction to alla prima technique, painting surfaces, and pigments.
Students will work on canvas board.
Class 4
How to stretch a canvas and begin a new work using a chosen technique.
Students will transfer a new image and begin work on stretched canvas.
Class 5
Continue developing painting with support and guidance.
Class 6
Finalise painting with support and guidance, followed by critique and reflection.
Discussion around varnishing, storage, hanging, and framing options.
Materials included:
Oil paint
Solvent
Paper
Canvas board
Stretched canvas
Easels and brushes supplied for use during class
Students to bring:
A reference image for week 1
For beginners, Danielle recommends a clear, coloured A4 print with good contrast. Other students may prefer to work from a phone or iPad.
An apron, if preferred

About Danielle:
Danielle O'Brien is a Brisbane-based oil painter and represented artist at Field Trip Gallery. She studied a Bachelor of Visual Arts in Toowoomba, where she trained in traditional oil painting techniques, before making Brisbane her home over 25 years ago.
Since then, she has exhibited regularly, run a gallery, taught with Hands on Art and TAFE Queensland, worked with a range of Brisbane creatives, and twice been selected as a finalist in the Brisbane Portrait Prize.
Danielle is a passionate educator who loves sharing practical painting skills in a supportive and approachable way.
